Is there a "Deep State?" Have presidents spied on their political rivals and vice versa? What is "fake news," disinformation, or propaganda and what is true? Why are there so many conspiracy theories in U.S. history? Just what is U.S. intelligence doing and not doing? Better yet, what should U.S. intelligence be doing or not doing?
These are some of the questions many of us have wondered in recent years.
I set out to answer these and other questions by writing a complete history of American intelligence from the Revolutionary War to the present. I created this page so the public can ask me questions about American intelligence, for example, the work of the CIA, the activities of the U.S. Intelligence Community before the 9/11 attacks and during the War on Terror, the events of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, etc. People would be surprised by just how many of the current problems in the United States have their origins in American intelligence history.
In the end, there's nothing new under the sun...or in the shadows of American intelligence.
